How the diagnostic process should work
A reliable diagnosis starts with a clear description of the fault. Before the mechanic arrives, make a note of what happened, when it started and what conditions bring it on. Does it happen only when the engine is cold? After heavy rain? When towing? At highway speed? Does a warning light appear, and has the vehicle recently had repairs, a flat battery or a jump-start?
